THE INFLUENCE OF NELSPRUIT AS REGIONAL AND NATIONAL CENTRE

Nelspruit is the Capital City of Mpumalanga and is situated on the main east/west route between Gauteng and Maputo and serves as a destination point on this route.  The north/south route connecting Zimbabwe and Natal through Mpumalanga also passes through Nelspruit, being the centre point on this route.  Road and rail connect the east/west route, while the north/south route is only connected by road.

On the international level, Nelspruit is situated only 189km from the capital of Maputo and 163km from Mbabane, the capital of Swaziland.  The harbour of Maputo holds major opportunities for Nelspruit to be the main link between this foreign export harbour and the rest of the national centres of the country.  Nelspruit will also be the hub of the Maputo Corridor development, to facilitate trade and tourism between South Africa and Mozambique.

Nelspruit offers a diversity of services to the inhabitants of the region.  From Hoedspruit in the north, Burgersfort and Machadodorp in the west, Badplaas to the south and to the eastern side up the East Coast, including Swaziland and Maputo, people are utilising the services offered in Nelspruit.

It has a natural service area within which it is situated, determined mainly by physiographical factors.  The watershed to the east, separating the Highveld from the Lowveld and forming a catchment area, can roughly be defined as the service area of Nelspruit.  A diversity of established services sectors are already operating in the capital, including services such as medical, financial, legal and all other professional services, maintenance, educational, religion, recreational and transport services.

NELSPRUIT AS CENTRE FOR TOURISM

Situated on the brink of the tourism mecca of Mpumalanga, the importance of Nelspruit in the tourism industry is eminent.  The City Council, together with the Publicity Association endeavour to promote the opportunities of Nelspruit as tourist destination and not only as a stop-over point for tourists on their way through to the adjacent tourist centres.

7.                  GENERAL GROWTH RATE

Since 1986, the population growth rate of Nelspruit was 4,6% per annum, while during the corresponding period the growth rate in business floor area was 6,8%.  This again is an indication of the importance of Nelspruit since 1986 as a regional shopping centre.  For the corresponding period, the industrial floor area showed a growth rate of 18% per annum.  The industrial growth came to a sudden halt during 1991 due to a lack of available land for the expansion of the industrial area.  The Riverside Industrial Park was proclaimed in 1998 with 63 erven of which a number have already been developed resolving this situation.  Tekwane Industrial Park is in a planning phase and proclamation is expected during 2000.  The proposed development of Msele Industrial Park, on the old show grounds area, is presently in the process of being developed.

The expected growth rate of Nelspruit for the next three years is estimated to be

between 4½% and 6%, due to activities surrounding its function as Capital of the Mpumalanga Province, its favourable location on the major tourist routes as well as on the Maputo corridor.

Further indications of the most recent growth tendencies, since the declaration of Nelspruit as Capital of Mpumalanga, are reflected as follows:
